Instagram Is Fueling a Lucrative Tattoo Tourism Industry

What’s Happening: Tattoo artists with massive social media followings have been attracting eager clients from around the world, leading Brooklyn tattooer Eva Karabudak to kickstart a partnership with The Standard.

The Download: Some people buy keychains or fridge magnets as vacation souvenirs; others choose to get inked. Tattoo artists, especially those with massive social media followings, are attracting clients from around the world eager to find the perfect artist for their dream tattoo. The “tattoo tourism” industry sprouted alongside the rise of Instagram, says Eva Karabudak, the founder of Brooklyn tattoo studio Atelier Eva. “When Instagram was created in 2010, it became a powerful platform for me to showcase my work to a global audience,” she tells Surface. “That would’ve been nearly impossible for an emerging artist before.” Her intricate needlework became popular on Instagram and allowed the Turkish artist to build a reputation beyond her home country, which persists today (SZA and Joe Jonas are fans) thanks to slickly produced videos emphasizing the creative process rather than the end result. A soothing studio packed with ethereal portals and Togo sofas helps, too.

Now, Karabudak estimates 30 to 40 percent of Atelier Eva’s clients travel from another city to get tattooed by one of the studio’s 31 artists. The trend jumpstarted an idea for Atelier Eva to partner with The Standard on a deal that tattoo tourists would be hard-pressed to pass up. Guests of The Standard East Village or High Line will receive a $100 voucher toward a tattoo session at Atelier Eva plus an aftercare package from Mad Rabbit. On the flipside, clients traveling to New York for a tattoo at Atelier Eva will earn discounted rooms at The Standard. Hotels and tattoos may seem like strange bedfellows, but the partnership isn’t totally unprecedented—Moxy Hotels recruited JonBoy for a residency at its Times Square location in 2019, and Virgin Voyages feature onboard tattoo shops curated by World Famous Tattoo Ink. For Karabudak, tapping into The Standard’s downtown-cool clientele is another strategic way to further cement her studio as a creative destination.

In Their Own Words: Karabudak’s early insights about social media helped cement the idea to join forces with a hotel brand. “[It] directly influenced how I approached building the brand strategy for Atelier Eva, focusing on reaching clients worldwide through the same powerful tool,” she says. “We’ve been able to cultivate a distinct aesthetic and remain committed to it, resisting fleeting trends that might dilute our brand.”

Surface Says: It might be hard to believe, but tattoo tourists have existed in some capacity since the 1300s.

Bar Esmé Brings High Concept Cocktails to Chicago

At Chef Jenner Tomaska and Katrina Bravo’s Chicago fine dining destination, Esmé, multi-course high concept tasting menus are in constant rotation. Esmé’s new sibling concept pares things back with a three-course French-inspired tasting menu dished up in sunny interiors furnished by Scandi mainstay Muuto. With a scaled-back culinary menu, Bar Esmé’s 26 cocktails can shine under the expertise of beverage curator Stevan Miller, who drew inspiration from Esmé and the Art Institute of Chicago when crafting each libation.

Miller’s are not your average craft cocktails. Take Female Nude #39, inspired by the work of artist Courtney Shoudis: the drink is served atop a pink statue and layered with Bayab African gin and pineapple, habanero and green cardamom-infused egg white, and edible rice paper whose coloring is inspired by Shoudis’s source painting.

A Wooden Beacon Mimicking a Robert Doisneau Image

Tippet Rise Art Center’s newest pavilion seems to epitomize the vast Montana sculpture park’s mission to merge art, classical music, and nature. Designed by Arup with Raj Patel at the helm, Geode features four triangulated forms and a Yakisugi-treated Douglas fir interior, optimizing acoustics while withstanding the Wild West’s harsh winters. Positioned in a remote, elevated spot inspired by a Robert Doisneau photograph of Maurice Baquet performing on a mountaintop, the structure leverages natural bedrock for sound enhancement and a raised steel frame that minimizes environmental impact. The pavilion debuted with cellist Arlen Hlusko, setting the stage for pop-up concerts that aim to engage hikers and cyclists wandering the park.

DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Karen Swami has been drawn to the tactile and visual intricacies of clay since her early childhood, but it wasn’t until the late aughts that she decided to dedicate her life and career to mastering ceramic craftsmanship. Between her workshops in Paris and Brittany, the French ceramicist continues to experiment and create vessels renowned for their elegant simplicity and defined by their poetic imperfections, which she highlights using time-honored Japanese lacquer and kintsugi techniques.
