This Skyscraper’s Appearance Changes Throughout the Day

What’s Happening: Selldorf Architects has adorned its first high-rise building, One Domino Square, in pearl-like porcelain panels whose shimmering surface changes colors with the sunlight.

The Download: One of the final components of Brooklyn’s Domino Park is ready for its grand reveal—and One Domino Square is emerging as one of the most bold additions to Williamsburg’s waterfront. The Selldorf Architects–designed complex includes a 39-story condo tower and an adjacent 55-story rental tower connected by a seven-story base. Located next to the Williamsburg Bridge, the buildings are clad in iridescent porcelain tiles that glimmer subtly in the sunlight and create a mesmerizing effect as the day progresses. According to principal Annabelle Selldorf, the pearl-like tiles were inspired by the colors of nature and made by Spanish firm Cor Asociados Arquitectos; One Domino Square marks the first time the material has been used as exterior cladding in the United States. The building heralds another milestone: Selldorf’s first skyscraper after a spate of cultural and mid-rise residential projects.

The Domino campus’s five-acre stretch has been undergoing a gradual transformation by Two Trees, the real estate developer perhaps best known for a similar overhaul nearby in Dumbo. With the inauguration of One Domino Square, the site is inching closer to a fully realized vision that complements the area’s sea of fragrance boutiques and Michelin stars. The developers made a promising first step with industrial-themed Domino Park, which opened in 2018. Then came One South First and Ten Grand, a pair of connected buildings by CookFox Architects. Most recently, Practice for Architecture and Urbanism overhauled the historic Domino Sugar Refinery by nestling a new glass structure inside the 19th-century factory building. Further development is afoot: If all goes according to plan, Bjarke Ingels Group and Field Operations will realize River Ring, another pair of skyscrapers with an accessible beach, by 2027.

In Their Own Words: “One Domino Square is our first project in Williamsburg, but as someone who has lived in New York City for my entire professional career, it is a place that has always intrigued me,” Selldorf told Wallpaper. “It has been fascinating to watch how the area has been transformed over the years from an industrial, gritty zone into a desirable residential neighborhood with beautiful parks and interesting restaurants and shops.”

Surface Says: Along with Frank Gehry’s rippling 8 Spruce across the East River, One Domino Square adds another trippy accent to New York City’s increasingly stoner-friendly skyline.

A Cloistered Vancouver Cocktail Lounge Offers Slow-Burn Ambiance

We’re hard-pressed to remember the last time a project brief emphasized reducing natural light, but for lounge and restaurant Ama, its lit-from-within glow seems to hinge on discreet luminosity. The founders of design studio &Daughters began by covering two interior windows to draw eyes to the backlit horseshoe-shaped sushi bar at the center of it all. A black granite bar creates a dramatic contrast to the interior’s amber glow, further accentuated by mirrored walls that gleam like molten bronze. The menu of sake, sushi, and raw fare connects back to the restaurant’s name and concept: an homage to the women divers of Japan who harvest seafood and pearls for the island nation.

ITINERARY

Leslie
Wayne:
This Land

When: Until Aug. 2

Where: Jack Shainman, Chelsea, New York

What: The New York–based painter-sculptor’s current show, which is named in homage to Woody Guthrie’s Americana ballad, charts a scene of exploratory westward voyages. A series of sweeping vistas of the Rocky Mountains are framed by Boeing 737–like window frames that evoke the lasting impact of Wayne’s 2021 transcontinental trip from New York to the Cascade Mountain Range. Additionally, “The Ages Have Been at Work,” a poem by Taylor Brorby, contextualizes the same aerial views the artist printed in a limited-edition handmade accordion book that unfolds to a 10-foot long scroll.

CULTURE CLUB

A Costume Contest Showdown at the Art Students League Gala

Over this past weekend, more than 400 practicing artists, patrons, and educators took to the Art Students League of New York’s landmark 57th street headquarters for the organization’s annual Dream Ball. There, its Vanderbilt Gallery was transformed to host a different kind of show: Burlesque performances by Syn Sultress and Aquarius Moon. And, in a departure from a typical gala program, the League hosted a costume contest for those who went above and beyond in dressing to the theme of Maximalist Fairytale. After the winners and their prize of a gift card from event partner Nordstrom were announced, attendees enjoyed a set by DJ Black Helmet and explored the themed rooms decorated by League students.

When was it? June 1

Where was it? Art Students League, New York

Who was there? JiaJia Fei, Madhu Powar Garg, Nadja Sayej, Ricardo Woo, Murray Hill, Eva Avenue, Jack Howard-Potter, Erica Howard-Potter, and more.
