The Bombshell Allegations Against David Adjaye

What’s Happening: The fallout has been swift for David Adjaye, the celebrated architect who was accused of sexual misconduct by three former female employees at his firm. Five years after similar allegations derailed Richard Meier’s practice and sparked an overdue #MeToo moment in architecture, does Adjaye face a similar fate?

The Download: Earlier this week, London’s Financial Times published a bombshell 4,000-word report in which three women accused the acclaimed British-Ghanaian architect David Adjaye of sexual misconduct, ranging from assault in an airport restroom to unwanted advances in his apartment. Each of the women, who remained anonymous, was a former employee at Adjaye’s eponymous firm in 2018 and 2019 when the alleged abuse took place. Adjaye has vehemently denied the accusations, calling them “untrue, distressing for me and my family, and run counter to everything I stand for.”

The extent of the consequences awaiting Adjaye—and by extension, his 200-person firm, which maintains offices in New York, London, and Accra—remain to be seen, but the immediate fallout has been swift. Within 24 hours, Adjaye announced plans to relinquish several ceremonial roles and projects. He stepped down as a Serpentine Galleries trustee, Oregon’s in-progress Multnomah County Library parted ways with his firm, his work on a Holocaust memorial was paused, and his installations at the Counterpublic triennial and DeCordova Sculpture Park are being reevaluated. He also resigned as an advisor to London mayor Sadiq Khan, who tapped Adjaye as one of the city’s “design advocates.”

It’s a breathtaking fall from grace for one of the world’s most in-demand architects, whose lengthy list of career wins spans the RIBA Royal Gold Medal, being knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, and designing the National Museum of African American History and Culture. But it’s not the first time a high-profile architect has faced allegations. The profession experienced its first true #MeToo moment with Richard Meier and (albeit less so) Peter Marino, as well as the creation of a Shitty Architecture Men list in 2018. Despite the former’s efforts to rebrand after Meier’s retirement, his firm never truly recovered. Given Adjaye’s stature as a symbol of progress in an industry not particularly known for its diversity, the allegations are seismic.

In Their Own Words: “Many firms are structured around a ‘Great Man’ with a singular vision, which lowly employees are tasked with carrying out,” the Shitty Architecture Men list’s anonymous creator said in 2018. “It’s very top-down. This can create power imbalances that make junior employees vulnerable to exploitation, whether it’s harassment, pay inequality, or something else.”

Surface Says: Adjaye’s projects already wielded worldly implications, but now they’re burdened with an even greater emotional weight.

Lava-Like Visuals Tease Las Vegas’s MSG Sphere

Intriguing footage of the MSG Sphere in Las Vegas has teased its impressive LED displays, adorned with cascading red and yellow lights and the greeting “Hello World.” Enthralled by the Populous-designed structure’s mesmerizing lava-like effects created by the swirling lights, viewers likened the sphere—the world’s largest such structure at 111 feet tall and 515 feet wide—to the Death Star or the Eye of Sauron. Slated to open in September, the sphere will host multi-sensory live entertainment, with U2 scheduled as the landmark’s opening act.

Evan
Nesbit:
/ˈsɪn.kə.sɨs/

Where: Roberts Projects, L.A.

When: Until July 8

What: Leaving one’s preconceptions at the door is easier said than done, but Nesbit’s latest exhibition demands just that. The boundary-blurring artist takes the rhetorical technique of synchysis, a deliberate jumbling of words to create a sense of bewilderment, and applies it to visual composition. Using his signature media of acrylic and burlap, he obfuscates all sense of subject, structure, and framing, adding poetic resonance to the moments spent searching for meaning in each painting and study. Through this approach, each work is considered for what it is, rather than the viewer’s notions of what it ought to be.

We Buy Gold Takes Over Jack Shainman and Nicola Vassell Galleries

Last week, We Buy Gold, the roving art space founded by Joeonna Bellorado-Samuels, celebrated the opening of “Seven” across Jack Shainman and Nicola Vassell galleries in New York. The exhibition features 10 artists —among them Abigail Lucien, David Hammons, and Kerry James Marshall—and explores how the practices of each disrupt space, time, and language. The opening festivities, which spanned the two Chelsea galleries and the Broken Shaker cocktail bar at the Freehand Hotel, certainly seemed to blur space and time together on a celebratory open night attended by the gallerists, artists, and a swath of industry friends.

When was it? June 29

Where was it? Jack Shainman, Nicola Vassell, and Broken Shaker, New York

Who was there? Lorraine O’Grady, Derrick Adams, Tyler Mitchell, Paul Anthony Smith, Ashley James, and more.

Years Since Wimbledon Changed Its Women’s Dress Code

Wimbledon is practically synonymous with its strict all-white dress code, but the prestigious tennis tournament is undergoing a historic change for the first time in 146 years. Female players can now wear dark-colored undershorts—a tweak aimed at alleviating anxiety around periods. Although these garments can’t exceed the length of their skirts or tennis shorts, the update is expected to relieve stress and help players focus on their matches—at least until Just Stop Oil protestors enter the picture.
