These Melted Disco Balls Embody the Chaos of a Club Night

What’s Happening: Kelly Wearstler teams up with Dutch studio Rotganzen to create a club-inspired line of melted disco balls, the first in a newly launched series of limited-edition artist collaborations on her e-commerce platform.

The Download: Follow the call of the disco ball. The universal club mantra is as true as the laws of nature, but as anyone who has experienced the rollercoaster of a big night out will tell you: Our cherished hedonistic pastime is full of chaotic energy. That familiar tension is captured by Kelly Wearstler’s new Dalí-esque melted disco ball series, a collaboration with Dutch creative collective Rotganzen.

The collection, Quelle Fête, recalls the melancholic glory of dancing the night away at glamorous haunts like Studio 54, Paradise Garage, and The Roxy in the 1970s and ‘80s, “when everyone thought there was no end to the happiness, but it also felt a little unreal,” says Rotganzen’s managing partner Erik Schilp. The name of each piece references L.A.-inspired music (LA Woman, Tiffany Queen) and evokes the spectrum of emotions felt during a power-charged club adventure. Cracked Actor, Schilp explains, “embodies the frustration and longing felt sitting in the corner waiting for a cab to bring you home”—the sorrow of a club night gone wrong. Sunset People, meanwhile, feels “intimate and erotic,” like two strangers embracing on the dance floor.

Rotganzen painstakingly produces each piece by hand in their studio out of foam, and then covers them almost entirely with tiles. (The only uncovered surface is the felted underside so as to not damage furniture or surfaces.) Besides the 150-editioned Tiny Dancer, each piece comes in a run of 10. The new release signals an evolution for the retail platform helmed by the “queen of the power clash.” Though Wearstler’s bracingly maximalist interiors often feature rare pieces by emerging artists and designers, her lifestyle brand has traditionally stocked home furnishings and accessories of her own design. Look for more of these limited-edition designer collaborations in the future.

In Their Own Words: “For anyone who has been to the more famous clubs, there’s always that double feeling of extreme happiness and elation confronted with the dark side—drugs and the exclusion of a lot of people,” Schilp says. “It’s a commentary on that dynamic in that it makes you happy, but also makes you wonder, think, and doubt a little.”

Surface Says: We’re here for the disorderly spiral of a club night and keeping it disco in any form.

Moncler’s First Fragrance Features Bottles with LED Screens

Moncler is branching into the fragrance game with scents that evoke the wild landscapes perfectly suited for their outerwear. The Italian label has unveiled two new scents—Moncler Pour Femme and Moncler Pour Homme—within two distinctive bottles, each bearing hallmarks of the brand’s identity such as the cap’s silver ribbing that nods to quilting found on their signature down jackets.

Formulated exclusively for Moncler by Swiss fragrance experts Givaudan, Femme evokes the radiance of powdery snow, Italian bergamot, and jasmine, while Homme conjures an alpine forest with a crispy, enveloping woody aroma. In a first for the fragrance market, the flask-shaped “borraccia” bottles are equipped with LED screens that can display personalized messages through a Bluetooth-powered smartphone app, a high-tech feature that recalls the brand’s luggage collaboration with Rimowa. Find it exclusively at Moncler boutiques and Bloomingdale’s.

Cipriani Plants Stakes Inside Manhattan’s Grand Battery Maritime Building

Once a great testament to New York’s architectural and seafaring prowess when it debuted in 1909, the Battery Maritime Building on the South Street Seaport waterfront has languished for decades, serving as office space for various city agencies and even once as a homeless shelter. Now the Beaux-Arts grand dame, originally designed by Walker & Morris, is ready for its next act. And who better than Cipriani to return it to its former glory?

The famed hospitality brand, whose restaurants and clubs embody maritime luxury, tapped Marvel, Thierry W. Despont, and preservation specialists Higgins Quasebath & Partners for the restoration and conversion of the historic structure into a private member’s club and hotel. On tap: 47 dapper rooms and suites with private balconies and views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty; a Deco-inspired jazz café; a soaring event space in the Great Hall with a show-stopping skylight; a white oak–lined spa; a member’s club in the spirit of Venice’s iconic Harry’s Bar; and a variety of culinary outfits.

Foster + Partners Sold to a Canadian Family Private Investment Firm

A private investment firm in Toronto has acquired a considerable stake in Foster + Partners. The deal was pitched as a “strategic partnership” that, according to a statement, marks an “important step in the evolution of the practice and will further growth and innovation.” Though acquisitions often raise eyebrows among staff fearful for their jobs, the firm notes that no partners will be ousted; 24 were actually promoted. Though terms of the deal haven’t been disclosed, we anticipate a hefty sum—the firm’s recent financials indicate earnings of $370 million, and the Lord himself often appears on annual rankings of Britain’s wealthiest people.
