Announcing Design Dose, Your New Portal for Exclusive Product Drops

For nearly 30 years, Surface has been a leading authority in contemporary design, applying our discerning eye to the worlds of architecture, art, design, fashion, and travel, with a focus on how these fields shape and are shaped by culture.

We’ve particularly taken pride in introducing our readers to inimitable products. From furniture and homewares to fashion and textiles to objects of desire, products with an ethos of craftsmanship and originality have always earned the Surface endorsement. On that note, we’re thrilled to announce the launch of Design Dose, our new shoppable platform for covetable, special-edition, and must-have pieces of design, on October 1.

For the design community, this new initiative will provide a platform to showcase exceptional work and connect with a passionate audience who appreciates the nuances of quality and craftsmanship. For our loyal readers, this means you’ll have an entirely new portal to discover up-and-coming creative talent while gaining access to limited-release products from the brands you already love. Look out for offerings from avant-garde fashion designers, small-batch furniture makers, innovative textile studios, fantastical sculptor sensations, and more.

Beyond curation, Design Dose will offer an elevated experience not typical of traditional e-commerce. Expect incisive product write-ups, designer Q&As, and studio visits from our discerning editors, lively visual treatments, and videos that offer a behind-the-scenes look at how leading designers bring their ideas to life. What: The rising London artist and former House & Garden stylist debuts a series of sculptural plaster furnishings and lighting fixtures—her first experiments in the medium. Dramatic in their stature and rough tactility, each one-of-a-kind piece is imbued with a sense of mystery and appears to take on a life of its own.

Year-Over-Year Decline in Business Travel

Tourism has finally started to make a timid comeback, but business travel has suffered immensely due to pandemic-induced remote work. A new study by the business spending management firm Coupa Software found that corporate airfare bookings declined by a staggering 97 percent in July compared to the same period last year. Experts predict the losses will amount more than $2 trillion, painting a dire picture for the beleaguered airline industry. To make matters worse, the Global Business Travel Association estimates that only 10 percent of companies will greenlight international travel in the next quarter.

ICYMI: George Byrne’s L.A. Is Beautifully Eerie

In George Byrne’s upcoming monograph, Post Truth (Hamilton Press), the Australian artist documents the past five years of his life in L.A. with a series of captivating if not melancholy abstract street scenes depicting the sprawling city’s loneliest corners. From a desolate gas station on Route 66 to the mint-hued Grand Motel, Byrne always finds beauty in the mundane.

Ian Volner, a Surface contributor, captures the essence of the Byrne’s approach in his opening essay: “What Byrne manages to induce is an eerily familiar mental state, an encounter with the city bound to send a chill down the spine of anyone who has spent a lonely afternoon in Las Palmas, or the eastern reaches of Chinatown, or drifting up North Gower at five o’clock, under the spreading darkness of the hills.”

Member Spotlight: Blueprint Lighting

Founded on the belief that custom lighting should take weeks instead of months, Blueprint Lighting made an immediate splash with interior designers. Headed by Kelly Aaron, the brand hand-makes its fixtures in upstate New York and features 36 in-house enamel colors, a variety of metal finishes and patinas, and virtually limitless customization options.

Surface Says: Blueprint Lighting is a Manhattan-based lighting studio producing contemporary chandeliers, pendants, and sconce illuminators. We’re head-over-heels for its Counterpoint Pendant and Pop Sconce, which come in unexpected, candy-hued colorways.
