| | | Turner Bursaries Recipients Announced
Back in May, the Turner Prize announced there will be no winner in 2020. Normally, a group of shortlisted artists would create work for a fall exhibition at Tate Modern with one winner being selected from the bunch, but the coronavirus threw those plans for a loop—that show has been called off, and many artists are now struggling due to the economic slowdown. Instead, the prestigious annual award for British artists has forgone this year’s edition to distribute ten $12,000 grants evenly between a pool of artists selected by a jury that includes Richard Birkett, Sarah Munro, Fatos Üstek, and Duro Olowu.
“Following a lively and rigorous virtual debate, the jury has settled on a list of ten fantastic artists who reflect the exceptional talent found in contemporary British art,” says Alex Farquharson, director of Tate Britain and the jury chair for the awards. “From ceramics to film, performance to photography, they represent the many exciting and interdisciplinary ways that artists work today.” The ten winners of this year’s Turner bursaries include Arika, Liz Johnson Artur, Oreet Ashery, Shawanda Corbett, Jamie Crewe, Sean Edwards, Sidsel Meineche Hansen, Ima-Abasi Okon, Imran Perretta, and Alberta Whittle. Though the award’s new format seeks to maximize its positive impact by offering grants to as many artists as possible, Farquharson said the Prize will return to its normal format next year.

While a student at Parsons School of Design, Reut Ringel interned in fashion every semester, often with stylists. “I started noticing that, in clothing, women have many options. But in fine jewelry, our options are limited to white, rose, and yellow gold. Being in New York, I was into black—a color that was so obviously missing from the fine jewelry repertoire.”
She went on to develop a patent-pending process to make black gold by evolving techniques used in aerospace and automobile manufacturing. We caught up with the designer, who launched her brand, Reut, just as Covid-19 took hold, to discuss how her digital storefront hosted on Squarespace enabled her to showcase her artful, unconventional work.

| | | Cuts to New York’s Arts and Culture Budget
Thanks to the ongoing shutdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic, New York is facing a staggering $9 billion loss in tax revenue and has reduced its total budget by more than $1.1 billion across departments to close the gap. The city’s new budget, approved on July 1, will slash its arts and culture budget by 11 percent. These cuts extend to the Department of Cultural Affairs, the agency that coordinates grants to arts organizations across the city, which was forced to reduce arts funding from an all-time high of $212 million in 2019 to this year’s $189 million. The city’s education department will also have its budget for arts education programs cut by 30 percent.
